So the letters mean the date? Sorry if the questions seem stupid, but I am seriously clueless.

I found an old looking silver tray. It is stamped HSCEP followed by some odd looking man, a crown I think.. (Hard to make out), then the numbers 5585 I have been looking on the internet, but having no luck. Any silver experts out there?

There is one in eBay's completed items listing, (no bids, so it didn't sell for the asking price of $4.99). Quote:
"pedestal tray is marked "HSCEP, Nickel Silver, Silver Plated 93" and has the symbol of a lion and horse on either side of a crown"

Does yours look like this?
The numbers are likely production numbers, or model numbers for that type of tray.

No. It's oval, almost like a boat or bread tray. I will send a photo, as well as a better one of the insignia. Looks like a cat to me, haha Maybe it's these old lady eyes.Even the supposed lion looks like it has a man's face to me.. I did look on eBay for similar items before I posted the query, but didn't see anything. I do think the letters are the Dublin stamp like the previous person said though. The letters are identical. This is my 1st time on this site. you are all awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time.

the company is called HSC, Hartford sterling co. founded in 1900 Philadelphia, PA. the ep means electro plate. the pictorial stamp can be seen under the silver plate section of site Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks & Makers' Marks in the H section. I have (roughly) the same bread plate with the model number 5512
