Gold all over the handle and blade, ivory handle... this thing is NICE, too bad it needs a good cleaning (which, no worries, I won't do!)

Can anyone identify it?

Very nice ...sword...hope you are listing absolutely everything that comes out of there. Are you selling items one at a time or are you having an estate sale. Would be very interested in attending. Thanks

There are so many things we've gotten from the house, it's hard to post them all! So far we have been listing things on ebay (sold a WWII parade sword from Japan, old sewing machine, Pez gun, and now we have a huge lot of marbles, old radio, clock with uncirculated silver coins, and a snow globe from the 60's on ebay, all with about a day left.)

Looks like a Turkish "Shamshir" sword, used for many centuries. Turks still used them during WW1

Yes, the shape of the hilt and pommel appear either Turkist or Persian to me. Persian in this case meaning any of the Arab countries.

That's a fantastic sword, and you should have a restoration done on it. It should be easy to clean up the blade, but I'm less sure how to clean the ivory. Anyway, it's a great find, congrats!

awesome looking sword, i'd probably buy it if you haven't sold it yet. Do you know what kind of animal did the ivory come from? (hippo, elephant, etc)? Ivory is a strong material and if I am not mistaken the hippos ivory can withstand some bullets (I think I got that from history channel HAHA)

Is the sword sharp or has a real dull blade? The handle just don't look right.

My first thought was Persian,
then Russian
either way, I think it was made by an ian ;D

It's a shamshir or talwar - Persian/Middle East. COULD be VERY old. Take it to an expert.

Shamshir.gif

It is a type of sword prevalent in medieval India dating back to at least the 13th century. It bears a resemblance to the Persian shamshir and the Turkish kilic. The difference is that the blade of a talwar is wider than the blade of a shamshir. The blades and hilts of the talwar were often very ornate and featured carvings or gilding. It became a predominantly Rajput weapon while the Mughals relied on the Shamshir. The town of Sirohi in southern Rajasthan produced the lightest blade among talwars. Due to its growing popularity in Mughal India, the talwar was also produced in 19th Century Afghanistan in form of the "Afghani talwar," or pulwar.

OK… here’s my take on this… the handle is well worn; the sword was used… so it isn’t ceremonial. The sword has too much decoration to just be a regular soldier’s sword… so I’m wondering… Persian prince perhaps? <fingers crossed> Did I mention how BIG and HEAVY it is? It is Around it is 39" long and has a 36" blade!
