Identify Artifact

About forty years ago I was diving a river in Florida and I found the following artifact. It is metal, seems like pewter or something like that. I have had it sitting by my desk for all these years and have always been curious what it is and how it got in the river. Is it just a piece of junk? Any idea's?

It appears to be an Egyptian Revival (probably 1920's) decorator item inspired by this ancient wooden artifact:

Thanks PBK, for solving the mystery what it is. Still wondering how it came to be that it was in the middle of a river with no houses around. Must of been dropped from a boat.
