"ideas for a new ice digging tool" ( BASIC EXAMPLE NEEDS IMPROVEMENTS)

Hi everyone, been reading threads about chopping ,chipping, and smashing threw frozen and hard ground. So tonight i was up late cooking a roast for lunches ,as is way to hot to cook during the day.I went out to shed and had a look for some materials to make a basic ice pick, come slicer. The blade is made of high tensile bright bar.{very hard}Took a couple of hours to get the angle right.Want it to chip and shatter the ice at the same time.I used a 16 inch section of box steel as a handle, so you can fill it with a void filler to take the shock out of hitting hard ground. To test it i froze a gallon ice-cream container with water and a couple of hours later.the ice tool smashed the ice block with one hit.The head is welded 2 two strip keys, then inserted into the box section and welded together.Heres a pic of my very simple and basic tool .If anyone has any ideas for the start to a project.Iwould like to here.

Looks good to me Tinpan - the only thing I would consider is wrapping some kind of handle on it, so it wouldn't get cold on my hands.

Good Job - I like it!

This is a store bought item and I have found it very useful for chopping thru, and it is very solid, one piece unit and I wear it on a standard hammer belt holder. Works like a charm, my son and I each have one and it is even good for chopping thru roots, and the blade is not too sharp, although we both did put an "edge" on the blade, since Drywall hammers are sold with the edge rather blunt.

I would like to add, I think when the ground is frozen solid more than 4 inches, I would say forget it, this is for when there is a one to two inch frozen crust and hopefully your target is in the unfrozen dirt underneath. If frozen solid, mark the spot and return when the ground is defrosting, been there and have done that before. :)
