ID tag... ???

I found this tag at a construction site... the area has been populated for that last 100 years... there is a school close by, a resort from the late 1800's.. This was found at aprox 14 inches deep.. any ideas.. I thought of a prisoners tag... .with the word " yard " and all but as far as my research tells me there was no jail nor prison in the area..

any ideas.. ??

the reverse is a duplicate image.. the markings are hand tooled and arent lined up the same, yet the inscription is identical

Maybe not a patent sign, but a machine sign from one of Ottersons inventions.

Seems to be kind of sewer pumps or so !!??
