Yes it is all one item, I don't know a lot about gems or the terms so can you explain? I know that it holds light but doesn't shine through its very odd

First Image appears to be purple aventurine, While the last two iamges.. are not app tear.. but could be leaning more towards the herkemer diamond aspect.. Try to get an image without a reflection from under the stone..

Much better pictures.
I also thought it was two stones at first as well. But you description on the translucency of the stone makes me agree with Mamabear.
An Apache tear is Obsidian, volcanic glass. Can be black, red, or brown. Should have a hardness around 5.5. If it is some kind of dark quartz it should have a hardness of 7.

I havnt found anything that will scratch it that's why I'm so curious I used a file on it and it didn't scratch it

Quartz is harder than a file. If it is harder than quartz it might be a Topaz, but I see no crystal structure in the photo.
You might need to find somebody with a hardness testing kit.

Hi...I found this website and this is similar to a couple of your "gems" that you showed today and another post (the clear rock that looked diamond-like)

Hope this helps...(and these gems are worth varying amounts of money, so keep onto them)...:)

Look at the 22nd photo down from the top of this website page

Oligoclase Specimens

Just search through rough gems/minerals on google images and find something close...?

I would also like to know more about the hardness.

My first impression was also apache tear, however the colour throws me off. Almost like Iolite, but not quite.
When you view it from different directions, does the colour or the colour tone change? Rotate it in hand and look. :)
Iolite seems to change colour from different directions.

Do you know of any lapidary club or rock related club in your area?
Maybe they could help you further there.

Do you know how to recognize milky quartz?

No it seems to stay the same color....when I hold it up to the sunlight it has a grayish blue color almost like gun metal....its hard to describe really....but what's so strange is that when its in my hand it looks totally dark gray and non-transparent but as you move it into the light its like glass, you can see into it clearly but no all the way through it. I sould like a crazy man

Johnathan, I'm still leaning more towards obsidian/apache tears then. From you description we can say it isn't Iolite. :)
I've seen the exact "phenomena" you describe in obsidian.
