Found metal detecting late 1800's - early 1900's site..could be older.
I can see a reeded edge..also..this is tough because an impression will be reversed.

Maybe used to make counterfeit coins?

Not from a lead mold. What would melt at a lower temperature than lead? Plastic?

I'm not sure? I collected counterfeit coins for years when I was in business. I had Morgan Dollars made out of lead.

I'm fairly certain now that there were one coin pressed into each side of this piece..making a sort of homemade watch fob or pendant.
The coins were a Barber dime and a Barber quarter.
I believe the coins stayed in the piece while worn by the owner..there is even some tarnish in/on the lead...just need too see if they are on the site now..or taken out before the piece was lost or discarded.

I found one for a half dollar dated 1893. I came back years later and found the rest. I now have both pieces of the two piece mold and five of the coins he counterfeited. I think Charlie Harris did an article in American Digger and he put a picture of them in there. Sorry I don't know how to upload pictures.

I think that it was a pendent or fob too, the coins would have stayed in there but it fell out. Very cool find.
