Found this detecting a pre 1860s homesite. I understand its probably musical related but does anyone know now what this would of been a part of or attached to?

Size? Looks like it may have gone on an instrument strap.
 

It looks like one link in a chain of something decorative. Can you give a size comparison and pic of the back?

I have a 2 piece button with the same design! Hope you get a definite ID , I'm thinking civil war period!
 

+1. I'm not seeing lettering either, and at least some of the similar examples have the same stippling.

The background (looks like corduroy) is different than other examples. I think that may be the detail/key to help track it down.

I agree it'd be nice to date this to CW era, but this design (if not still in use) was used at least until WWII.

There's also a possibility that it's British; they used similar buttons.

Here's the button (with back missing ) that I recovered on a mid 1800s site in Illinois. Seems similar to yours.
 

After looking around on Google some I'm wondering if this wasn't a part of a Victorian era link bracelet
