Nice find! Not much there for a definite answer, but maybe Ninjafossils or Harry might be able to help.
 

I see the resemblance; but, odd as the piece is, I don't think it's a vertebra or any other bone. Vertebral centra are comprised of a thin cortex over spongy (cancellous) bone. I see no cancellous bone exposed on your find.
 

Lol.. I've done this before you can't delete everything you have to leave three characters... I left the dots too
 

Well now that the post is bumped back up top I guess I can put the picture back up. I was pretty positive it wasn't petrified wood seeing as how I have a lot of it I've picked up. To be honest the thing was just creeping me out and i was getting tired of looking at it. I found lots of artifacts not far from the item in question and didn't want to have any chance i picked up something i didnt want to. Call me crazy but I decided to put it back where I found it.

That was a needless caution . . . even if they were human remains (which they aren't). I preferred the strategy of getting some local museum-type or biology teacher or maybe a physician to opine on the pieces.
