It IS optic case I think.
What KIND is a mystery right now..
i DOUBT it is a sniper scope case.
I think more like an optical sighting device for another object. Artillery, Mortar, etc...

The hook you see on the front goes to a USGI web belt..
Thanks, Rando

I stand corrected. I wasn't thinking about how damn LOOONNNG those springfield scopes were.

I think that is EXACTLY what it is...
03 Springfield was a bada$$ sniper rifle ,does that long scope mount on an M1 Garrand also? Keep thinking Jackson in Prv Ryan ,thought he had a case :icon_scratch:

Your web belt connect looks original. The eBay case was probably replaced.

The rifle, scope and case on the eBay link I posted is a 12 inch toy model of the real thing. It sells for 32 dollars with toy rifle and toy scope. You have the real thing. But because the ebay case is a toy, it may be different from your real one and yours may open differently. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310179793573
When I first saw the eBay listing, I thought it was real. It fooled me for a few seconds, as it is a pretty good toy replica.

Re: ID help with WW2 item

If that is a WWII German sniper scope case, it would probably hold a Unertl scope. The scope would have been mountd on a M98 Mauser bolt action rifle. Unertl is the only company I know of that made those long fixed power scopes. They came out long before WWII and were considered the best of the best. Nowdays optics have improved and better lenses and smaller tubes are used. Monty

I agree with you about the rifle. I have an 03-A3 Remington 30.06 given to me by my grandfather. It was still in military stock and web at the time. My father hand carved a sporting stock for it from Birch wood. It is marked: U.S. Remington Model 03-A3 Followed by the serial number. Wish I knew all of the history of this weapon. HH
