I like your pottery Larson. What did they temper it with? Crushed shell? Does it have little white specs in it? :coffee2:

thanks Tn
yes they used crushed mussel shells
I can see it in all of the pottery shards that I have ever picked up
they got the black color from ashes

Cool.... Finding a vessel filled with shells would be something else.....

Most of the pottery around here was tempered with crushed granite, and occasionally with some mussel shells. It seems like mussel shells were used more frequently the further south you go.....

I think pottery vessels look real pretty when the gold and silver granite pieces sparkle in the light...

I guess that answered an earlier question I posed to you. Great stuff.

Soon you'll be back out in those fields of yours. Spring is dang near sprung.

thanks coteau
thanks bravo, btw what was the question you had asked me?

Oh, it wasn't anything, just had you ever found enough pieces to reassemble any pots. I see you have.
BTW, my folks are in northern Iowa. If time permits, next time we head north, it might be nice to come over your way and poke around in what you call a field and what most of us would call Nirvana.

bw, that small pot is the only time we ever found almost all the pieces
that was 20 years ago
very unlikely it would
happen again
it has been driven over by tractors too much
