I'm fine with rats as long as they dont bite me ;)
$40 of what kind of metal? copper I'm guessing

Your not alone in the past 2 weeks (total of 3 trips) i been garage picking n dumpster hunting and i gotten quick a bit:) so far i have gotten 6 working vacuums two $100 or more thats new (new filters not even dirty) :)

the best haul was last night now i live in a trailer park n they are putting in new double wide trailer. well while i was driving around looking for TV's and more vacuums. i saw something in the dumpster n to my suprise it was about 200 yard of capper cable wire. the comcast kind. need lease to say i grab it all up n fill my van with it n took couple hours going through it n rolling it up. now tomorrow I'm stopping to drop all my stuff off (700-1000 pounds of steel n 20 to 100 of copper) :D

well good luck to everyone n happy hunting

do you sell the vacumes and TVs or do you scrap the copper and other metals out of them?

I do it on occasion. Actually, it's a family tradition. When I was little, my parents used to take me dumpster diving. I presume that that mentality goes back to my grandparents and the great depression when everything had value. All of us are quite affluent, but it's the principle of the matter (if that makes any sense). It's also good family time. My dad and I used to fix up old things we'd find. My mom liked the walk and getting up early. Good times. Now that I'm on my own, I usually go out once a month or more, looking for whatever, usually finding scrap metal or something to resell at a garage sale. Plus it's just plain interesting to see what other people are throwing away.

I'm cleaning up the vacuums up so i can sell them and the TV went to my oldest son. as long as they work ill clean n fix them to sell if they don't work ill scrap them for the copper n anything else i can get out of them.

going on a dumpster diving trip again tommorrow. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Oh i also forgot to mention i took all to the scrap yard today n they said they couldn't take the cable cause it was co-lack cable (to much weight not enough copper) so now i have alot of stripping to do :( but i did have 889 pounds of steel @ $.03 a pounds for a total of $26.67. well good luck u to all n have fun.

My best find in a dumpster was a backback with several hundred dollars worth of fishing gear. 30-40 Mepps spinners, 3 pack rods w/reels, knives, multitools and odds and ends. Some lady must have been P.O.ed at her boy friend.

Good dumpsters to search... Try apartment complexes on the first and last weekends of the month. Lots of good stuff people didn't want to take with or had no room for when they move in.

Great post Whitesid! 8) No, you are NOT alone! I dive too and the funny part is, I use my ol' MTB to do it with. 8) I too, have had to leave much good stuff behind, because of lack of space on a two wheeled Salvage Unit. ;D Man, it's neat to now meet a fellow biker diver here on TNet! What a great place this is! :)

I've dragged home more than my share of computer towers until I learned to do a quick field strip of 'em right where I find 'em. Anything copper colored or made of Aluminum is definitely worth my time, all the time. It's all like free money to me, where ever I see it. I've lost track of just how many kool things I've salvaged from bins, curbs and behind buildings and in alleyways, over the years. :)

Hey there, Goldinmypan, your find was TOO MUCH. I'm a fishin' freak from way back and I'm SO drooling over here! :P Man, just the freakin' Mepps turn my crank even. :o A #3 Mepps in Silver with NO squirrel tail, just the little red plastic sleeve on the treble, has been my Number 1 all time lure for over thirty five years! :)

All the rest of it was like five Christmas's on the same day! Fantastic!

All this is more proof, that you just never know what you are going to find out there. Don't cha boys just LOVE this form (branch) of Treasure Hunting?
