Project481.webpProject484.webpProject483.webpProject485.webpGot tired of the grip handle on my tools busting through and the metal handle (which is nothing more then a piece of thinwall pipe welded to the shovel end) gouging me in the palm of my hands when I was digging targets. So I made a handle myself, out of pvc pipe, 1" I.D. and added a butt cap to it, and slipped it over the handle (after I wrapped the handle with rubberized material to take up slack and provide cushioning against rough usage) filled the inside with Goop plumbers Glue and sealed around the edges...then bought some heat shrink wrapping and covered the pvc. Now this baby is ready for the field!

now that is a fantastic fix. thanks for sharing

Nice to know! Will try that. Thanks!

The only answer is to buy a Quality tool. I bought a quality digging hand tool back in the 70's and am still using it. Both cutting edges are beveled in from there app. 1/8" thickness. One edge is serrated and the other is sharp. The 'flat' area is slightly concaved. The handle is hefty and flared out at the top and bottom. It is just about perfection in a digging tool. The actual tool was made in Italy for a premium garden supply company called A. M. Leonard. I also purchased there all steel planting shovel with a D handle. I am still using that. If this company is still around, I would advise checking them out. Just some advice from an oldtimer, Frank...-

I do agree that quality is tops this one came with a MPX it is a Gator and handles well but the grip was the problem and I found that a lot of digging tools have the same type of grip. It slides onto the handle, loosely fitted and this causes the grip to slip down as you push it in the ground with the handle being hollow it cuts through the butt end of the grip exposing the handle and this can cause blisters or cuts.

I will tinker around w/ my digger, as the grip is shot as well. Thanks for sharing... and I will also look into Frankn's experience w/ another style.

Well, you guys, I looked it up for you. They still have the classic digging tool, but now it is Swedish SS. Still has that great molded handle. It has a lifetime warranty. Digger cost $18.99 and leather sheath is $10.99. They also have many styles like the offset style if you like that style. They also have every kind of shovel you can imagine. Check out there master catalog on line, or they will send you a free one if you want. A.M. Leonard Tools for the Horticultural Industry since 1885.
It is the A. M. Leonard Co. Fantastic tool selection! Go look, Frank...-111-2 de Vinci.webp
