I was that close to finding my first marked Confederate button today. I have been pounding a site hoping to dig one. Today, I worked the trashiest part of the site and got this button. When it popped out of the ground I just knew it was a Reb. It was pretty dirty so I put it in my pill box and hunted for two more hours before the heat got to me.
When I got home I rinsed the button off and the first thing I saw was the backmark and it read "Scovills Superfine" My heart began to race a little and I was starting to do a little happy dance in my head. Then, I turned it over and was greeted by the flower design!
Oh well, it's still a nice find and there is a Rebel button out there just waiting for me to find. I also found part of another button, some round balls, and a couple shell casings.
The flower button is the size of a quarter.

Nice Button.
I know this is an older post but I see your still active on the site.

I know how you felt , I was on a CW site Yesterday and dug one of these "heavy" cast Buttons and in the field Could swear I saw a 'Drooped wing Eagle' but don't recall any CS Staff Buttons that were Cast.

Got home after dark & waited 'like a Kid at Christmas' until today to clean it up, ( I also put it into a plastic bottle right after I dug it.)
I've got my hopes up in the past & had already prepared myself for a JIC Let Down.

Well it turned out to be a Button Similar to yours but has a full shank & a Flower & Star Motif, with the same back mark as the one you found except for the Scovills Superfine is written closer to the rim '2ed ring in' & is a tad smaller than a Quarter.
Still a Cool find for the collection..

Hope you found your first Confederate Button in the 4 years since this post.

From N Ga, where a Buck ball of any Size or a Minie 'fired or not' is a Banner Day LOL.

Davers

Still looking for one but I am unable to hunt right now due to a back injury I suffered in an auto accident over 3 months ago. I will be back by spring time and already have a site picked out if I can get permission to hunt it.
