I was trying for just one long day. Relax, hunt, lunch in the field, kick back a couple times and listen to music. Then, back at it again.

A really beautiful day, a new place and just out to enjoy. I didn't do too terribly and on the way home I stopped to pick up supper. There was this
slightly over aggressive barker for contributions to our saints in combat gear. I smiled and waved him off, trying to keep my "buzz", so to speak.
It was, after all, a really nice day thus far.

Anyway, he just wouldn't quit! WHY do those people DO that!?!?

Finally, to get around him I looked him in the eye and said, "I'd already given all I'm going to give."

He said, "Oh SURE! At the office I suppose!?!"

Still looking him in the eye, I said, "No, ..... Vietnam, I gave my brother".

He looked aghast and to try and make up he snapped to attention and saluted me. I shrugged and turned away before
the tears started coming.

I know, just one A-hole. Still. :dontknow:

Here's what I found on this, my memorial day.

Happy Memorial Day to everyone and to those certain ones, thank you for your service.

That was some good, humbling karma you gave him. Maybe he won't be so abrasive to the next person he asks.

I salute you as well.

I hope you're not referring to me, as I am not a Vet. Just lost my brother. Big difference.

Thanks.

oh, man, I missed that part of the story..... Im sorry for your loss, the thanks goes to you and your family for your sacrifice then, again, my condolences.

I AM a vet. It is our families that give us strength, love and encouragement. I salute him, you and your family. Much respect to one who gave all. Thank you.

I learn a little bit more about you each time you post. I was 10 years too young to have served during Vietnam, but remember vividly attending a cousin's military funeral. The salute by gun, Taps, the closed flag-covered coffin.....all made an impact on me. After my grandfather's funeral, this one was the saddest I ever attended. To this day, hearing Taps immediately brings tears to my eyes. As 1emeraldlady has said, families are often forgotten and not given due respect or praise. Bless you, your family and our brave who give.
