I haven't seen a maul/axe of this size so I am kinda at a loss and would like your opinions on this artifact. Any help I could pass on to the owner would be greatly apreciated... It was found in NE Kansas in a plowed field along a creek.

Maybe Mooch wil chime in. I am thinking he found some giant ones like that???? That is big!!

Must have been some stud to weild that bad boy...lol

Looks like a 4/4 full groove axe, most common axe type, probably early archaic. Those axe types are usually 3-9 inches .

i found one similar to that here in madison county illinois. mine weighed around 8 pounds. flint chaser was with me. i will have him post a picture of it for everyone when i can get it to him. thanks for shareing. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

Like SOHIO said, it looks to be a large Full Grooved Axe and though not really all that common they are found that size every now and then.

By the way SOHIO, I use to work for SOHIO, or Standard Oil Of Ohio, back in the late 70's and early 80's. My father ran a SOHIO service station for many years.

Sounds like you pro's got it figured out. Thanks for all the help on my delima. I'll pass it on to the owner.

Thanks,
Jason
