Well... I think I have to say that I am getting burnt out on this Civil War digging.. I have been hunting since the mid 1990s and use to enjoy relic hunting in Stafford,Virginia, me and my dad (who is a old time digger) could go anywhere basically in Stafford and hunt with no problems and find piles of union relics (yes over 140,000+ union soldiers moved through Stafford and camped here, basically the whole war) we always found stuff, it was just kewl just being out there with my dad relic hunting and spending time with him.
But - now fast fwd to 2013, the spots are gone (well they are there but getting permission is like pulling teeth), you can't just can't pull to the side of the road anymore and hunt a wooden area in Stafford (yes - you use to be able to do this without issues til about 2001 when the population boom hit Stafford like a freight train outta hell) now people call the cops in a heart beat when they see someone pulled to the side of the road relic hunting a spot. Sure - I have permission to hunt many many good spots in Stafford and I take plenty of people (some members I have met here on TN and have taken them) to these spots to have them dig union bullets or a General service eagle button or a NY Militia button or just something in that nature. But - when I want them to take me to a spot it is like some "Area 51" spot and everyone wants to keep their spots a secret, when I will flat out take people or tell them where a spot is,etc.. I am just burnt out on digging union stuff, all the confederate stuff is like pulling teeth to find. I just am sick of digging a general service eagle button, ny militia buttons, 3 ringers... I feel like i need something more other than hunting Civil War sites or colonial sites that just produce flat buttons or civilian flower buttons.
I want to get into digging silver ore or some mineral I can make money off (no not gold cause that is not gonna happen), I own a excavator and a bob-cat and was wondering - i just got permission to dig on a piece of land out near Russell County, Virginia that has a-lot of lead ore and other minerals in a spot they were mining for lead and silver in 1899 in a creek. So, am I just being stupid for wanting to go out there and give it a try? Or maybe I could conduct a DIV hunt here in Stafford on a piece of land my great uncle owns and just make a few $1,000. Money is tight right now and I just want advice. I don't mean to rant, i love the Civil War (though if i was to go back in time it would be during Andrew Jacksons time) and researching it and finding it but, it just gets dull after a-while finding the same stuff over and over again and not finding any good plates & buckles or ID tags lately (if i found a ID tag i would get my rush back lol)
anyway if someone has experience in finding silver or something like that please chip in or maybe if you are free and live near Russell,Virginia and would like to check this site out with me. thanks
Oh also there was a post on here a-while back i think of some guy finding pounds of silver in a creek - that got my attention...
