Metal Detecting
My wife's family had its annual family reunion in Pennsylvania this week in a huge 13,000 square foot mansion. When I found out that the mansion was built in 1924 I
was all over it with my metal detector!

I started my hunt in the front yard and only managed one clad dime and two Lincoln cents. I then worked my way down the left side yard into the back yard and removed a couple of clad
quarters, dimes, and some Lincolns cents. I was perplexed as to why all the coins found were at shallow depths? everything was 1 - 2 inches. Not a single coin was over 2 inches?
I theorized that the landscaping was redone will fill dirt perhaps in the 1970's or 80's. This might also explain why no wheat pennies were present.

After 2 hours of hunting I hit a 1943 silver nickel and a silver ring in the middle of the back yard. The only area around the mansion that I believe had the original dirt was the side
yard on the right side, that's where I dug up a 1942 silver quarter.

I spent 3 hours hunting the yards and covered the area going over the same ground several times. So I'm confidant that most of the good targets are gone.

What a neat place to hunt and stay, the inside of the mansion was amazing! Spent 3 days there!

Nice. I am also curious about those brass rings in the last picture. I have found a couple in the past and have no idea.

Congrats on the silvers. Places like that where the ground has been landscaped and moved are pretty frustrating. You know there is more there but it's probably too deep. That bug is a cicada. They have pretty strange life cycle where they stay in the ground for a couple years. They make a distinct buzzing sound when its hot out.

Do they rent the mansion out ? Sounds cool .... definitely a cicada noisy things ....

I wonder if the brass rings went on a curtain rod??

Great haul...!
Those brass rings, are for curtains and the rod.

Congrats on the nice hunt! :occasion14:

I'd be happy with that hunt! Congrats!

Nice place to hunt.
Those rings being brass makes me think of rings for a shower curtain.

Awesome place to get to hunt. Congrats on pulling some nice Silver and relics. Nice pics!

Some things are just strange. I hunted my uncles farm in PA where the stage coach stopped to water the horses and people from his spring and didn't find 1 old thing before 1925. It was my wife and I hunting and we had top of the line detectors and had been detecting for 10 yrs or more. I guess sometimes people didn't stick around long enough to drop stuff or they just didn't bring it with them. Really sucks when that happens....

Yes we did. We had 35 family members occupying 9 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms. Great time, the place was a giant maze!

I always wanted to live in a mansion Good job on the ring and coins alot of the fun is what you might find great post and sounds like you had a good time

Nice job! P.S. We do have cicadas in CA...the ones in Sonoma County look like this:Cicada.webp

I’ve definitely done worse in similar types of homes. While it would’ve been cool to get a little more, 2 silver coins is a decent haul from any yard. Nice going!

Looks like a great place to hunt. Sounds like you had a good time. Great story along with beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing and congrats on the nice saves.

Very nice hunt!! Congrats!!!
PS. I hate fill dirt

You found a cicada! LOL. We are supposed to be getting a large brood this year that only appears like once every 17 years. No doubt the mansion was landscaped. I have ran into that problem on nice estates here in Pennsylvania.

Drapery rod rings was my first thought too...You didn't do bad for a chance there!

Looks like some nice finds CHF. Maybe not as old as you were hoping for, but 3 silvers is still nice, and it sounds like you had a nice time at the reunion also. I agree with the others who identified your bug as a Cicada. Just had one land on me yesterday while I was hunting a yard. Had my tree bark camo pants on. Guess he thought I was a tree trunk.
