I had already dug two flats this afternoon when I got this. When it came out of the dirt I seen the rectangular hole. Any ideas?

Furniture Escutcheon - UK Finds Database -
Like this but the hole bothers me a little, thats why it could be horse related. Although in the UK the circular types are attached differently with a iron screw on the reverse,,,,so....maybe a US version.

What about the back of a wobble-shank button (early 20th century)?

You got a good idea Ben.

Bit large, don't you think?

Maybe but its smaller then Dandys and Tombacks I've found.

The Concho idea is good also but it would be the smallest and thinnest I'd ever found.

The square hole is what stumped me to begin with.
Escutcheon was first thought also.

Dandy's were only manufactured during 1750-80.
This is not of that construction technique, so its irrelevant.

I do agree it's a bit larger than the common overalls button, where that type of inserted wire shank was used a fair amount. What does it measure Rick? 7/8" ?

Just larger then 7/8" but not quite 15/16".

Looks like a Knife handle hilt or tang butt.

That's a possibility also. I'm hoping another piece shows up.
