I think its some kind of valve

I found this in the hay field I've been detecting. The body looks like brass. Two ears on the "front" look like a knob was there. It has a screw and 2 ears to keep the knob from slipping.
It been hit by some farm machinery. The back end of the ball part looks like it was broken out. It looks like the shaft extended beyond the back of the ball, it too is broken. I don't get the projection on the side. It has a small hole thru it. Its about 2 1/2 inches long.

Kinda resembles the gas valves on old space heaters.
