I think it's a button?

Found this yesterday, I can make out the 'U.S.', didn't notice it til I got home. I'm pretty sure it's a button, but I could be wrong. Any info would be appreciated. It's the size of a penny, and nothing is visible on the back, I know it's not the greatest condition.

Re: I think it's a button?

There is a 1-piece pewter button shown in the Albert book which closely resembles your find, and is the same size as your find. That 1-piece pewter button is listed in the book as button GI-30, a US Army "general service" Enlisted-man's button, in use from 1808 to 1830.

Please notice that I said button GI-30 "closely resembles" your find. The book does not show a GI-30 button with the EXACT SAME design of the letters US that is on your find ...but the book says "the letters vary in size" on various specimens ...so you may have found one of the variations.

Wow! Predates civil war, not to shabby for Tampa. I reckon it was from one of the soldiers from the now non-existent Ft. Brookes. Thanks for the info!!!!
