I think I found gold! please share thoughts so I can know for sure:)

It sure appears to be Gold. Believe it or not, a little rubbing alcohol poured on and rubbed on Gold, then rinsing with water, can clean up dingy Gold and really make it shine. If you try it, please post some new pics.

Use a needle and see if it is malleable rather then brittle. Gold is metal and hence malleable.

Looks nice. As EU said take a pin and apply pressure to the possible gold. Pyrites will break up under pressure. A not so sure way, but a good test, is to take it outside and look at it in the sun then shade it with your hand. Gold shines and pyrites will fade. If you know anyone with a metal detector you can also have them scan it in all metal mode and see if it goes off.

Have you found out whether it is Gold or not? I sure hope so for you! If it is Gold in and all over that rock specimen, the assay for the piece would be very high and I hope there is a lot more of it. I was viewing the pics again and while I can't be sure, it looks like the rock is a piece of a geode.

Ok so I applied pressure with steel needle to the specimen and it left a small indention it did not crumble. It has the same beautiful glow in the shade or sun. Does anyone know where to get an assay I live in san Bernardino county. Thanks for all your help

If you are a member GPAA can do 1 free assay a year.

So, we're you find it? :laughing7:

Our club, Rt66 gold miners had a geologist from one of the UC's come in a while back and give a presentation on he and his students' gold surveys of Big Bear and the San Gabriel mtns. It was an eye opener. There is a ton of gold left in those mtns. according to his calculations. He will even buy specimens off you at market value for his research.

I don't know that I'd have it assayed. Assay costs money and unless you have a lot of material its not worth the effort. My opinion. Personally I'd crush it fine and pan it, make a button out of it and take it to a jeweler or pawn shop and have them test it for purity... or buy a test kit myself. :) Keep it or sell it, your option, but it is a nice speci.

Mr. Lee's idea is a good one as well.

Hi a streak test is easy, reliable and reasonably non destructive. Pyrite with be dark grey and Gold will be gold.
it does look like gold... awesome for you if it is.
