it is a trigger guard but the way it's made I would say it is precivil war. Cool find

I dont know what its off of but definitely half of a trigger guard. I wish I had time to search. I guess you already knew that. :D

You're welcome and Thank you. I've been digging for 40 years so hopefully I've learned a little something. I think, and hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, that the trigger guard might be colonial. I've dug several gun parts at colonial sites and they were similar to your trigger guard

It does look like it could be a New York's Hudson Valley Fowlers.

Now now in the heck did that end up in a cornfield in Iowa. I hope I can find the rest of that gun in that field. You just never know what your going to find and that's what I love about this hobby.
