i picked up a dropped coin at Walmart checkout, and it's Silver!
I was checking out through the 20 items or less counter at Walmart, though I had quite a few more than 20 items. I make up for that by being a very fast checkout. Just as I was leaving, I noticed a dime on the flat surface of the well where the bag carousel sits. It was a bit dark, and looked like a clad that had been exposed a little to the elements. Probably only because I metal detect, I picked it up, and the thought came unbidden into my head: should I offer it to the clerk? No, I quickly decided in my own favor, it as likely belonged to a departed customer as to Walmart. I put it in my pocket.
Late that night, when I undressed, I found the dime in my pants pocket and put it on my desk.
The next day, I was straightening up my desk, and being curious about the dark dime, I looked at it edge on. I couldn't say for sure if I saw a flabby dark copper line or not, I mean it looked dark, but I couldn't make out a line necessarily. So I put on my reading glasses and just checked the date:
1962.
It took a few moments because I was drawing a "Senior Moment-type" blank on the silver cutoff date. 1962 seemed very recent to me in my old man's mind. Then I remembered. 1964 was the last silver mintage.
Eureka!
As it appears to have been a dropped coin, I'm including it in my collection of metal detected dimes, which were all dropped. Now I will call it my dropped dime collection.
