My friend dug this up today. Its diameter is 28mm. It doesn't match any large cents due to the writing on both sides around the rim. It doesn't appear to be a Rosa Americana. I'm stumped. Here are some photos. I'm putting it through the peroxide process now in hopes of more detail...

Here are two photos from different angles of the same side of the coin (with the most legibility):

And a photo of the reverse:

Will, just a quick look and I am sure not typical colonial or early American copper, hard to say right now, but perhaps look at Hard Times Tokens? Just to give you a possiblity of looking at. If noone comes up with the answer, I will dedicate some time tomorrow looking.

Thanks for your reply, Don. After the peroxide, it looks like one word on the front of the coin is "Culture." The "LTURE" is pretty plain, anyhow. We'll continue to stare at it and see if we can make anything else out...

Thanks to Evolution for a good guess: (D. Webster Hard Times Token)

I've also come up with a guess about the token (T. Duseaman Hard Times Token)--seems like a floral design on the same side with the word "---Culture" (which I'm assuming is "Agriculture").

This is another possibility for its ID, other ideas are also more than welcome. This one ain't easy.
