You're right, Gribnitz!

I first thought I saw traces of an anchor on the shield, as on the early 1800's U.S. Navy button which is listed as #NA 68 in Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons by Alphaeus H. Albert. Taking a closer look, I now see that it is a Federal shield.

These are the type that turn up at old untouched celler holes.

I'd take a old button over a old coin almost every time.

very nice button john , those usually have a lot of gold gilt under all that dirt , my artillary button looked like that before i carefully cleaned it

I had to lighten the picture with a photo editor to see it. Now I just wish I would find one I could definately correlate to military. I only seem to find the flat buttons, but at least they have back marks.
