I recently dug up 2 lead bullets. I believe they are from a pistol. Each measures 5/8" high and flat base is 3/8" wide. They were 4" down in very dark black dirt not far from a shotgun shell base ffrom the Clinton firearms co. which I dated to 1905-1922. They could be old but no petina. I took dirt off with toothpick soap and water. Any ID would be appreciated. Again hit 4-5" down with the Fisher F5. PC100940.JPG

at 3/8 ths wide across that's about 38 cal -- 3/8 =.375 of a inch

Check the diameter with a micrometer. .38 cal=.357–.358 inches (9.0678 mm)---9mm luger bullet diameter =9.2mm.

Thanks. I will look into that. Just curious how old these bullets are.

What does it weigh? That would also help identify it, a 9mm bullet should be .355 diameter and weigh 88-115 grains, (5.70-7.45). That looks like a 357 magnum or 38 caliber pistol bullet to me. It should weigh 90-158 grains (5.83-10.23). 38 caliber was a very popular round starting in the mid-1800's. That looks like one of the older the 158 grain lead round nose to me.

Could be a 38 S&W/ The bullet diameter is .365 and was introduced in 1877. Without a caliper measurement and weight that was the closest I could find in my reloading manual. Bullet looks a little short for 158 gr .357
