Hello! ?

I live in a 1750 house with a 1800 addition ? on 200 acres (although I dont own all of the 200) of land...75 in fields and the rest in woods....The house had four owners (all decendents of the orginal owner) until 1923, when it was maintained as rental property until 1960.
It was empty from the 60's until a complete renovation was done in 1999. ?The orginial owner was in the militia in Revolutionary war and was justice of the peace and sheriff...He owned 34 slaves...

I love the history of the place and was excited to find "stuff" when a footer was dug recently (am replacing the original dairy that was with the house) ?Found mostly bottles (mostly late 20th century), door knobs, broken pottery and depression glass, and some farm tool parts

I would like to see what else is around here..I had a friend, who recently got a metal detector, come by this weekend...but neither one of us really knows what we are doing yet...found LOTS of handmade and cut nails (1700s-1800s) and bunches of chunks of unidentifiable iron stuff and a fork...along with bottle caps and cans...

I would appreciate any advice on my search, ?is there better places around the farm, house, or woods, that tend to hold more promise? Or is it just looking everywhere...THe problem we run into is STUFF is everywhere...cant go a a few inches without getting a signal and finding something..we seemed to be getting the hang of identifying pop tops, but really always dug anyways, because were afraid that is where the "treasure" is...

I am not looking for monetary value but just love to have old items associated with the house and its past..

any advice on searching old homesite and land would be appreciated..

thanks

We are definetly on the same channel ;D My nieghbors house has an extremely similar past, built in 1754, one of the residents served in the civil war, and another served with teh local law enforcement, I dont think it was ever rented, but it had alot of parties in the arly 1900's according to books. It also has many acres of farmland which I have detected on. To get past the square nails try turning it off of all metal mode if you have it on that. If not try turning up the discrimination so it rejects nails. What model detector are you using? I used a tracker 4 by bounty hunter and it worked ok and i found plenty of stuff. I keep my square nails, some of which i found by taping a high power magnet to my shoe, some of them haev unique heads or are shaped differently. My advice is to look everywhere, and i mean everywhere. You will find old relics pretty much anywhere you go near old places. The most of it abviously in the yard and near the yard. Check under trees, all around the house, in farming pens, near old wells, etc.. But be carefull near those old wells, some can collapse. Also look for pieces of old glass, they could mean an outhouse or trash pit, which would mean old bottles and relics. We look forward to seeing all your finds ;)

if looking for old relics i would look absolutely everywhere and dig each and every signal.........gldhntr
