Metal Detecting
I decided to go back over some some curb and sidewalk strips in an older area of town that I've detected numerous times before to see what I could unearth with my new CTX. I'm still winging it and still have a lot to learn on how to properly operate a CTX, but I'm still managing to dig some good targets with it.

Almost from the get go I dug a 1928 Standing Liberty Quarter. That made my day right there because they're super hard to come by especially one with a readable date. I don't know how I missed that one. I must have been sleeping when I went over that area before. It wasn't a great signal, but still.....

My next find was a 1937 Buffalo Nickel. It must have been on edge or something. I was getting a wacky high tone audio signal and a high bouncy VDI number. I was shocked to see a nickel pop out of the hole. It took some work to get it out from between a big root and the edge of the sidewalk.

My next find was a 1935 Mercury Dime that I managed to nick with my digger. There was a lot of trash around it and I was having trouble pinpointing. It may have been on edge as well. Nicked or not, I'll take it!

My next find was a 1964 Washington Quarter. It was down around 7 inches deep and give a great signal. No walking by that one, but that sucker was hard to recover. It was under a deep root. I also pulled a memorial penny out of the same hole. I must have been snoozing on that before as well.

I had a couple of targets that without a doubt in my mind were silver coins. I was getting VDI numbers of 12- 44/45. The audio was tight and sweet. One was near a magnolia tree and the roots were a solid mass and there was no getting though them. The second one was near a large tree were two huge roots were crisscrossed making it impossible to get to the target. One day, maybe a hundred years from now, after the trees are gone, someone will recovery them.

My next project with the CTX is to run back over those same exact areas using the 6 inch search coil. I think it will find even more silver.

Thanks for looking!

You are a silver magnet, congratulations! :occasion14:

tabman. you are cleaning up all those areas you used to search. That S.L.Q quarter is just beautiful,

That was a great hunt, congrats!

Awesome silver finds Sir, really sweet! I have left a few unknows to the roots also but the what ifs can sometimes bug you. we need some sort of root spreader, actually a laser would be better to cut out sections of roots to get to what is there. could have been that spanish silver or silver dollar you have been hunting for LOL. on edge or not, great job at recovering those finds

nice finds

I must agree...the SLQ is a real beauty! Nicely done.
I like the eagle on the back the best.

What a day, congrats!
Thanks! I had to cut the hunt short because all of this pollen we're getting is killing my sinuses.

nice finds
Thanks!

Thanks! Those roots are tough to deal with. I don't make too big of a mess.

That was a great hunt, congrats!
Thanks! I had a great time. I can't wait to try out the 6 inch search coil and see how it does.

Thanks! I have plenty of places to hunt again since getting the CTX.

Thanks! I'm lucky to have some good sites to detect.

Nice finds! Awesome to see a date pulled on the SLQ
Thanks! Yeah, finding a date on a SLQ that is year is hard to do.

Flip the nickel and count the legs on the buffalo. 1937-D, three legged nickels are worth quite a bit even if dug. Google for pix but if the frontmost leg is only partially visible you have a nice find.

Thanks! I keep forgetting to look. I have coffee cans full of wheat pennies that I've never looked at the dates on them, because they were too dirty to read when I dug them. One of these days when I'm too old to detect, I'll clean them up and search for key dates.

Tabman, that SLQ is gorgeous.
Thanks! I was shocked when it popped out of the ground, I was elated when I saw it had a readable date.

Well done!!!
Thanks! I get lucky every once in awhile.

I’d go back with a tree saw and work on one of those roots.
There are located in a public place to make a big mess or spend too much time. Besides the time I spent cutting and digging, I could find several more silver coins without all the work.

Very nice Tabman. That is a great looking SLQ.
Thanks! I'm always surprised when I see one of those pop out of the ground.

Sweet hunt. You pay attention and you're really going to enjoy the CTX. That machine will unmask a Silver Dime that is laying in close proximity to an iron nail.
Congratulations on your finds. That full date SLQ is beautiful.

Fantastic hunt!!! Those SLQ’s are gorgeous when coming out the ground especially with a DATE!!!. I remember my first one when I saw the eagle I knew it was something great. Congratulations on all your finds.
