I Know You've Found One of These Too.

Hello All,

I have a hunch that many of us have found these items. Any idea of what they're for?

I think bigcy nailed that one..

Do you have a size reference, (cypress)??
No sorry. I found that picture online that shows a lot of different old garter styles. BBs swan thingy looks similar to the attachments in the upper right but maybe not.

Re: I Know You've Found One of These Too.

Maybe that's it, but it looks a little big and cumbersome for suspenders. (judging from Will's finger, it looks over three inches wide). It does look like it slipped over a button or a stud though. There's rust on it, and as well it is recessed as though it had to be slid on from the wide part. How were buggy tops fastened? Could there have been a series of these mounted on flat steel in the canvas that fastened them doiwn? Just guessing. :dontknow:

No clue. But, it does appear to attach to a stud of some sort. I agree it would be too bulky to be used as a suspender clip but, it's close to something of that nature.

Re: I Know You've Found One of These Too.

I think that garter clips, etc is the wrong track for this item. The item is large and heavy. It is Cast brass, unlike most clips. It is the size of the palm of my hand, which is very large to be wearing on one's socks or stockings.

Here is another one posted in "What is it?" back in February and never solved...

No idea what the item on the right is.

The one on the lower left is a nickel. It was a coin and worth 5 cents!

Yes I know. I am being a smart a** but someone had to say it!

Wagon related tie down loop? Or maybe a guide for the "bows" of a conestoga type wagon?

This item is way too big for a suspender. It is the size of my palm.

I notice also that the one HB dug doesn't have the nail/screw holes that the other ones do.

I figure there have to be others of these pieces out there, sitting unidentified in diggers' junk bins...

I dug one of them in a civil war period house site several years ago. mine doesn't have the nail holes. By the way mine is worn whatever it went saw some hard use. I'showed that thing to a ton of people and know one has any idea. I think it might be part of a very rare confederate buckle. I'll sell mine......cheap.

Only kidding about it being a buckle part.

Would you be kind enough to post a photo if you get a chance?

I'll have to find it first but I think I know where it is. I'll see what I can do about getting a pic for you. I know it had to be an important part of whatever it went to.

I like DCMatt's wagon hardware idea, especially the idea of a bow holder for schooners and chuckwagons.

I agree, I like DCMatt's idea. You beat me to the punch 'cos I was too busy digging on this site - awesome stuff. http://www.liveryone.net/carriage_directory.shtml
