Found this near a prominent Fort in central VA (on public land of course) and was wondering if anyone could possibly confirm the age. It looks like it was removed from the horse to be replaced.

Can post a pic later with the ruler next to it if needed. Thanks for your help!

It's hard to put a date on horse shoes. There are several good websites that show various styles and eras, but it is hard to say how old or young it is. Generally you can date the horse shoes by the other items you find in the same area.

Neat find :)

It was honestly a lucky find, and I don't think I will be able to try and get into the spot again. It's almost completely overgrown with briars, and there is a more recent proliferation of peoples garbage... It's sad that we live in such a historical place and nobody seems to care about the history, just because the state fences of a section of land and gives it one of those little brown signs with the name, it doesn't mean only where the history was. But, I digress... The way the shoe is torqued, I'm not fully sure if it was a removal and replacement or if maybe the horse threw it. I can say for certain that it came off of a larger horse, as it is approximately 6" long. I like to envision a workhorse hauling carts of powder kegs to the fort :)
