History 101 (Australia)

In Australia during WWII we had an POW internment camp in Cowra, NSW. There was a well publicised breakout of prisoners that were able to use the Australian coinage that was initially supplied to them, to escape on the trains across the road from the camp (well publicised in historical records). The government of the day decided to produce a special coinage for POW's to prevent such an escape happening again.

Now, the interesting bit....My grandfather worked for a company in Melbourne, Victoria, that was tendered to produce the coins for these camps (similar concept to the "holey Dollar"), and in fact my grandfather produced the original dies to strike the coins. My understanding is that we still have in our family some of the original hand struck proofs of several of the coins (~ 20 I believe, including the punched "cents"), and I believe one of the die sets. (...and yes they are still in "mint" condition)

How/where/what would be the most appropriate way of getting them assessed for value (principally for insurance purposes) ?

Many thanks for any assistance

Located, Melbourne, Victoria Australia.

If you are doing it for insurance purposes, then you need to speak to them. As most cover is "Old for New" & want you want is "Old for Old" (which doesn't really exist). ie you can't replace an old die/coin for a new one of the shelve. Your insurance company will probably ask you to get them professionally assessed. This will typically cost you 10% (or more) of the items total value. This is very expense so you need to find out, is what type of evidence they are willling to accept.
Try and get friendly with local experts on coins & see if they can help out or..
Take it to a large specialist auction house for an auction estimate etc.....

Thanks for the links...

Being such a unique set of items I have been very (and probably realistically) wary of approaching ordinary coin dealers for appraisals.

I'm wary of approaching ordinary coin dealers for appraisals,
on anything.
I trust EBay more.
