Thanks for the reply hollowpointred. If wear and corrosion made it thin would any physical features
be left? I would think it would be smooth.

Re: I Know It's A Large Cent But...

Can you post the diameter of it?
It should be about 27.5 MM of a Braided Hair large cent.
Also if its not worn out or counterfeit its should be about 10.89g.

sometimes extreme heat will cause those coins to do that I think. We had a fire here at the camp three years ago and I find all kinds of coins that are all disfigured like that. cheers

From what I see in the photo and without any other specs, for now I would agree, wear and corrosion, although I question if it is a later year Large Cent or not. I have a 1818 that is that thin and from wear, corrosion, and looks like it was found in an damp area, they seem to get more porous when exposed to more moisture.

Posting the diameter would help, weight to some degree, since there is a lot of wear, I doubt it is a counterfeit, but always a possibility......

Hi Donny, Thanks for looking. I will post the diameter and weight. I do not have a scale but
can find someone that does. Where does one find those scales and what is a good brand?

Thanks Don, as I said above, I will post dia. and wgt. when I find a scale. I agree there is alot of wear on this coin.
As thick as they were I would think all detail would be gone. Not sure on the date. I think I see 50 but not for sure.
I am sure it saw moisture. Was found almost on the banks of the Tombigbee River. Doesn't look all that porous and
I think most of the detail is in the patina. Have not cleaned it other than lightly rubbing with a toothpick. It started
flaking so I quit.

Randy

I got mine several years ago from this website, their quick shipping surprised me and I have had no problems with my scale, just make sure you get one in your budget range and that it would be great if you get one that has GRAINS, besides the normal grams, and other weights. Grains are how colonial and early federal coins are weighed. Large Cents are done in grams however.

Features that should be on a digital scale for those of us who find jewelry, colonial coins and US coins.

GRAMS - resolution .01 grams (Hundredths)
GRAINS - resolution .1 grains (tenths) Grain measurement is not on most scales so must look carefully.......

Usually the pocket scales that say they measure like 5-8 different modes of weight usually include all you need, but again, since you are in an area with a possibility of colonial coppers, make sure it includes grains.

Price range for a scale like that from this site probably in the mid $30-$40 range. Or try e-bay, but this website has been around for quite a few years and I'm sure is very secure to deal with, I had no problems whatsoever.

Here is the website I used, and one possible scale with features needed below this url.
http://www.oldwillknottscales.com/pocket-mini-scale.aspx (pocket scales)
As an example, not saying this is the one to buy, but this scale has all that is needed, weighs in hundredths for grams and tenths for grains.

All diameters are in mm, usually a good ruler will suffice for that or for a relatively small amount there are digital calibers out there for $20-$40 range.

Re: I Know It's A Large Cent But...

I have added a new pic of this LC and I hope it shows the edge a little better. The edge is still
raised a little bit. Also the dia. is dead on 26mm. The only scale I could find was the postal
scale at work. I don't know how accurate it is but it showed the weight at 5g. The thickest spot
I can find on this coin is a hair over 1mm. From looking at other LC's in other posts I just don't
see how there could be that much wear and still show any features at all. Thanks for your help.
