Some kind of ornate handle I assume ! It was found at a site that anything can show up from 1750's to modern !I originally thought big rosette in the field because the back was packed with dirt , The spikes that stick out from the edges are ferrous . I assume to mount wood onto ? Anyone dig or see anything similiar ?? MaineRelic

Could it be a handguard for a sword?
A possibility I had not thought of Steve ? I have nothing else to go on so Ill explore the possibility ! Thanks for the reply ! I don;t post on what is it often . When I do I usually get crickets and end up still stumped ! MaineRelic

Maybe for a letter opener....looks pretty small to be a sword. Is the hole threaded? I was thinking drawer pull. But what has me puzzled is the prongs sticking out of it.

It looks suspiciously much like a piece of old ornate Eastlake door hardware, perhaps the center hub to a doorknob, or a mechanical doorbell escutcheon.

Maybe part of a lamp, or chandelier? The prongs are odd though. Maybe they were longer at one time, and are just rusted into point shapes?
