Found this by the Ohio and Erie Canal also a train station nearby. Found it with my GTI 2500, about 4 inches deep give or take an inch. it's made of brass or bronze as I can't bend it. Thinking it came off a horse bridle but can't find one that has this type of hardware.
Silver Searcher is correct. I'm just replying in case you do not know what the term "gag swivel loop" means. It is a version of horse bridle equipment, made for civilian usage, not military. Most date from the late-1800s through early-1900s. Here's a photo of a page in the 1907 Pierson & Hough horsegear catalog, showing several versions of them.
