My guess would be something dry was kept in it. Maybe some type of spices or even tobacco. Don't know but it is a pretty cool find! Tennessee digger

I think it might be a perfume container as well. it has threads in the neck.

I think Broken Knee is right on - ladies purse perfume bottle - early 20th C.

I think it is kinda odd that they would use a Brass bottle instead of a glass bottle but Perfume canister appears to be the consensus.
