This object appears to be brass. It has an ornate design on it. Looks kind of like a mouthpiece to a musical instrument. For size reference, the coin in the picture is a braided hair large cent.

Re: I have no idea on this one

I don't know about mouthpiece... the ends of those are usually pretty thick.

Neat find though! I wonder what it is...

Thanks, I wasn't saying it was a mouthpiece. I was just describing the look of the object. I used to play the trumpet and this is certainly no mouthpiece.

I'm still going with my guess of "doohickey" from when you ID'd it as a thingamajig on your post in the "Today's FInds" Forum.

Just kidding.....I'm guessing candle holder too.

Can you give us some clues? What kind of area was this found in? In the photo, it looks like a crushed cylander..is that right? Could it be a part of a lamp?

It is a crushed cylinder. It was found around what used to be an older homesite. It is now a farm field. The finds that I made around this item range from the early 1800's up through the late 1800's. I suppose it could be a part of a lamp. I am really stumped on this one.

Thanks RELICDUDE. I'm going to run a search for that now and see what it turns up.

Here's MY guess. With the item dated by where you found it, I think it could be the short candlestick holder portion of a portable candle holder that was used for lighting the way as you walk around the house at night. You know the kind. They had a little finger holder on the side of the saucer part. That broken end could have been soldered to the saucer base and the flattened round piece on the other end would have been the drip shield . If you can't picture this in your mind, think about the small holder used by Ebenezer Scrooge as played by George C. Scott in the scene where he was in his bedroom and used this little holder instead of a big candelabra because of his "cheapskate" ways.

YEAH, LIKE THE PICTURE ABOVE. ;D ;D ::) ::)
