I went to the fairgrounds today to try to do some deep digs. I set up my machine and started swinging. Instantly got a nickel hit. Thought must be a pull tab. It was a nickel. Nice. Then another and another then it was nickel spill big time. All in a 6 foot area. I haven't counted them yet, but as you can see it is a lot of nickels. I have never heard of a nickel spill, but I found it. I had to stop cause it got dark. 98 nickels!

Wow , I've never heard of anything like a 98 nickel spill - what is the date range on them ? I guess there may have been a nickel
ride or contest at that area .

Your headline should read "nickel for your thoughts...I have 98 of them". Great spill, epic even.

Sweet 5 cent spillage there !!

I think I know why... can't find the article but there was a time when schools would make a giant massive pile of nickles - hundreds of dollars worth sometimes - and then someone would shovel as many as they could into a bucket before the time ran out. I can imagine many nickles were scattered in the area after the event was over.

What is weird is it was a small park on the fairgrounds away from where they hold the carnival. Almost every one of them were 2" deep and no other coins. The dates ranged from 1999 to 1964. They were scattered around a small tree that couldn't be more than 3 or 4 years old.

Reminds me of a park where they have a 4th of July coin toss for the kids every year. I hunted there this fall and picked 52 coins before I tired out. Most of them were zincons per the id numbers on my F75. So I left alot for someone else.

Update: Went out again this evening for 2 hours thinking I was done with the nickels. Detected where I left off thinking the nickels would end. Nope! Found another 54 and had to quit cause of darkness again and I'm still not done. The total so far is 152.

Sweet nice nickel spill! I one time found 14 nickels in one hole but you found a crazy amount of nickels in a small area. Another time I was out and found 148 pennies in 2 x2 foot area in a park. I just ended up using my pinpointer to dig most of them after 1 and half hours of digging pennies it was time to go there were many more there I couldn't dig them all. I think it was a spot where adults planted them for the kids to find on like an Easter egg hunt. Maybe that's what you found only yours were all nickels! Congrats on your cache of nickels!! Any old ones in your pile?

$7.60 in nickels is a good hunt. Your arm may be sore after this hunt lol.

It's crazy. Just when I think they must end they keep coming. My wrist is sore from popping them out with a screwdriver.

If it's an old fairground you may have hit a spot where they had a "nickel pitch".
That's where you toss nickels into a shallow glass dish on top of a pole, very often an upside down plunger in some type of stand. If you get your nickel to stay in the dish you win a prize.

They typically skid/bounce right off and many get lost. My Dad used to run the nickel pitch at our church festival when I was a kid. We used to pick up all kinds of nickels the day after.
The trick to winning a prize was to spit on your nickel before you tossed it. That way they stick to the glass way better.
Speaking of which, you just may want to clean those nickels!!

Congrats on your massive nickel find.
