I have several of these buttons. I thought they were Bingham School buttons, but I have never found one in Mebane, so I am inclined to think they are something else. When I bought some a while back they were advertised as either Berkeley School buttons or Bingham School buttons, they didn't know. I recently bought another just to have a full size one and now I would like to know where this school was. I have purchased two cuffs, a lone cuff, then I bought a coat button, totaling four "BS" buttons. The cuff buttons have the "transitional backmark" and the cuff has the 1870s backmark for Scovill MF'G Co. Take a look at the pictures.

The last guy advertised the button as this:

B S Berkeley School, Staff, Uniform Button - Albert's SU 41 (17)

I may not know what I am talking about but, if I read "ALbert's" button book right what you have are Berkeley School buttons. It is listed SU41 in the book and Bingham buttons are SU42. The berkeley one has the fancy scriot like yours while the Binghams are block letters.
That being said, i couldn't find anything on either school.

Bramblefind that is some impressive investigative work! My only concern at this point is that I believe we are looking for a school that operated in the 1860s. The button on the bottom has the 1860s mark.

FoundInNC, pardon me if you already know the following information. I'm just trying to be helpful -- not argumentative.

The coat-size SU-41 button you posted has a * SCOVILL MFG. Co * WATERBURY * backmark. Note the lower-case (small) letter "o" (which is underlined) in the abbreviation for Company. That is very important. Also note:
the two stars,
the circle of dots around the thread-loop,
and the indented letters are large-size and "wide" (meaning, the letters aren't just a narrow single-line indention -- but instead are a wide impression with a flat bottom).

According to the McGuinn-&-Bazelon book on backmark dating, that specific version of Scovill backmark dates from 1870-to-1920.
