I posted this, but for some reason it just went into the ether!

Like most of us, I use a digging knife, and a small garden spade to dig my finds. I also use a Big Lot's $10 short garden shovel, narrowed and serrated by a cutting torch. It will cut through fair sized roots when required.

A day or two ago, I ran across my old Zoysia plugger tool, similar to the one shown. It cuts a 2.5 inch diameter hole, almost 3 inches deep. I took is along on this morning's hunt in place of the Big Lot's shovel. I used it on the first detected coin. The coin was located about mid way into the plug. The best pat was, once the plug was replaced, you almost couldn't see where it had been!

The question is, has anyone else ever used a sod plugger to dig coins?

I cannot presume to speak for everyone, but I never have. Good thinnin

HI Alan; Yup. When I tried to use it I could not dig a consistent hole each time due to roks getting in the way and either jamming up the hole or stopping me from diggiong altogether. I have not used them in at least ten years ok. Good Luck. PEACE:RONB

Nope never used one. That looks like what you might use to dig a plug for mater plants though or a post hole.I like the idea of the serrated shovel though, did you modify it yourself?

Actually, C-Girl, a friend of mine did it for me. Although he has two detectors, he has only been out 4 or 5 times in the last 5 years. But he shure knows what's needed it a shovel!

By the way, went out this morning for a short while (it was 38° this morning, which is unseasonably cold). Sod plugger (now know as a coin plugger!), worked well!

I used to have a recovery tool made specifically for metal detectorists that is very similar to your plug cutter. It was called "The Hole Hog" P100_P101A.jpg It had a plunger in the center to push the plug out of it. I thought it worked pretty good, but the longer handle on the plug cutter would probably be better. Don't know what ever happened to my Hole Hog, it just got lost over the years.
