I posted this, but for some reason it just went into the ether!
Like most of us, I use a digging knife, and a small garden spade to dig my finds. I also use a Big Lot's $10 short garden shovel, narrowed and serrated by a cutting torch. It will cut through fair sized roots when required.
A day or two ago, I ran across my old Zoysia plugger tool, similar to the one shown. It cuts a 2.5 inch diameter hole, almost 3 inches deep. I took is along on this morning's hunt in place of the Big Lot's shovel. I used it on the first detected coin. The coin was located about mid way into the plug. The best pat was, once the plug was replaced, you almost couldn't see where it had been!
The question is, has anyone else ever used a sod plugger to dig coins?
