Well I had to take out the back seat and use about 4' of socket extenders to get the latch unbolted in order to get the trunk open. Turns out that the electronic actuator on the latch went toes up. I couldn't even remember the last time I used a key to open the trunk and once I got the lock cylinder out it had a couple of springs hanging from places they shouldn't have been. New parts are ordered, but until then it'll be the screwdriver to open the trunk.
The limited hunt total was 5.78 in clad, a lapel pin, cheap ring, the tiara charm plus the watch & box cutter shown previously.
The local newspaper published a listing of school performance on the Washington Standardized tests. The benefit to me was that I got a list of all of the elementary schools in the county
So I figure what the heck let's take a trip to some other parts of town and try out some new playgrounds and maybe I'll get lucky and find some that haven't been hunted.
So I'm off from the house before the sun comes up all ready for a good day of hunting. My plan is to hit a lot of schools and just skim the swings and monkey bars. If those produce, I'll do a bit more, but mainly I'm just going to hit a lot of schools very fast and identify those that have promise for later more detailed hunts.
Get to the first school and it's not too bad. I find 3 quarters 5 dimes and 2 cents. So it's off to the next one. En route I decide I had better find someplace with some facilities so I remember a big park nearby. Stop, do my business and decide what the heck I'm here I'll hunt. Good idea. Pulled another 3.00 or so in clad. Finally its off to the next school.
This one is really paying off. I'm getting quarters & dimes and one of the new Washington $ coins. Then under the last swing I get a really strange signal. Turned out to be a big ole pocket knife (so I thought). I picked it up and stuck it in my pocket quickly as I didn't want some one reporting me for having a weapon on school property Head for the monkey bars and sure enough a few more coins pop up. Then I found a big big wrist watch on top of the ground. Decided I'd spent enough time at this one as the neighborhood wasn't the best and I was starting to draw some attention. So back to the car and I pull the knife and watch out of my pocket. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the pocket knife was actually a box cutter. Dang that would make a nasty weapon!!!
So it's off to school #3. Absolutely no coins at all. Got one little tiara shaped charm that sounded off as a pull tab. Guess that is why the person who got there first ignored it. So back to the car. Decided my pocket was getting a bit full so I dumped all of my previous finds into my pouch and headed out.
Now on to school #4. Get there and get out of the car and IT HAPPENED. My trunk wouldn't open. I tried the inside release, the button on the electronic lock about a million times and even tried the key in the lock. I pushed on the trunk lid. I sat on it and bounced, I jerked it, pushed it and cursed at it. Nothing worked. Since my toolkit was also in the trunk I figured well SH*T and just headed on home. What was going to be a long hunt wound up being about 2.5 hours.
Of course both detectors are in the trunk and nothing I have tried has worked. I am thinking I probably got either the web belt or the wire from my headphones caught in the truck latch. I hope I don't have to get it drilled out.
I HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS
