I got this stone with a bird painted on it. What type of stone is it? It looks an orangy red on the back and has some glistning in it. Can anyone give me information on what type stone and any other information? It's translucent when held up to light. Thank you. bird 001.webpbird 002.webpbird 003.webp

Based on last pic- looks like flint, a smooth, shiny clean surface. Cool bird- need to find the rest to know what it was though. just guessing. HH yelnif

I have seen similar - where ever that type of stone comes from (lets guess Italy) then thats where this souviner was brought - circa 1950s

It looks like a fragment from a Painted Marble Tile....Very nice item :thumbsup:

If you will Google, 'hand painted marble tiles' you will see thousands. In the last pic of the cross-section, every where there is a crack, the paint has leeched into that area as well as on the surface. Here's a site with some interesting painted tiles:

It appears to be a form of Agate! It probably formed in a rock that was heavy in Iron Oxides thus the red outer layer.
