as a guess...and I used to carve those until asked to stop by some Lakota medicine people....
it is a mid 1960's to 70's pipe...the "indian" is the giveaway...

nice piece...no cracks in the bowl? while it is not a religious object to most, there are some who would question selling it...

around 100 dollars...perhaps more to an interested collector in santé fe.

That's Arizona Catlinite (Pipestone) from the quarries East of Chino Valley, Arizona.

It was probably made about 1971 by a man known locally as "Bongo Billy" in Jerome, Arizona. It looks very much like one of his earlier tourist pieces. Billy eventually became a very good pipestone carver but disappeared about 1973 - 1974. Probably a good plan for someone with the word "Bongo" in his name. :headbang:

It's a very large piece for that quarry that appears to be of good quality stone. I doubt the carving itself is worth much but the stone itself would be of value to a stone carver or sculptor. Being the Catlinite is from Chino Valley you should check closely for minute cracks. Some of that material was damaged during that period when it was dynamited by an ignorant operator.

OMG...bongo carved this pipe?
where on earth did that come from...
let me drive the 4 miles up the hill and ask if bongo carved this pipe?

and you identify the pipe as catlinite: is from minn.

GemRocks: Argillite
argillite is from outside of perkinsville Arizona...around 12 miles west of where I am sitting.

Catlinite is also from Chino Valley. Not generic Argillite.

Mindat

Two known locations.

So you are in Clarkdale. Upper town or Lower town? Not many people left from that time in Jerome. Ask Gary the construction guy with the blue eyes. He was Fern's friend before she passed. Or ask Katie Lee. She's ancient but I'll bet she remembers Bongo Billy.
