My digging partner and I paired up over the weekend and swapped sites. On the first day we started at my colonial site which I have recently discovered a old iron mill ruins. This property is 350 acres plus, I find new sites all over this property. Being that it is a iron mill detecting was tough. My partner dug a KG II, a button, and few other relics. I managed to find a few lantern parts, reed, spoon, a buckle and some other relics. Went to lunch then up to the next location which had some civil war activity. My partner dug 3 silver dimes, 1 silver half, 1 IHP, 2 mini balls (one was confederate 2-ring) and some others. I dug four 3-ring mini balls, 3 merc dimes, 1 barber dime and a barber quarter. Were assuming a 1930s coin spill scattered in a small area by plowing.

The following day went back to the mill site and decided to dig 2ftx2ft plugs and sift the dirt. Area I choose was where several structures once stood about 100 ft from the mill. The amount of iron nails is unbelievable, if you rake your fingers through the soil you would have a few in your hand. From sifting I found a tombac, 3 porcelain, 2 iron, and 1851 Goodyear's button, knife, complete crotal bell, buckle, tons of pottery and glass. What I found next I still cant believe, out came this colonial blue bead and a 1680 King Charles II 2 maravedis cob. :hello2: My first hammered coin, my hands still shake.

Thanks for looking. GL & HH

If your digging copper cobs, silvers likely not far behind,
Awesome finds.

Must find the privies, must find the privies......repeat....

Not a bad haul on the silver as well! Congrats!!:occasion14:

Thank you, I cant wait to get back there. Figures we have the only winter storm of the year right after I find this site. Now covered in snow and ice :BangHead:

The silvers were unexpected. Usually that site only produces civil war relics. My 5 silvers and my partners 4 silvers were found in one small area in about 30 min.

Congratulations on the nice relic finds and awesome cob recovery! :notworthy:

Awesome couple hunts and congrats on that sweet hammered copper :occasion14: I have done a LOT of what you did with excavating sections and sifting, and I've had similar results. Its amazing whats down there thats being masked by blankets of nails. One of the best tools I bought to do this was a 405lb neodymium magnet that I put on the end of a 4ft wooden dowel rod. Once I piled the dirt out of the hole, I run the magnet through it and it sucks the nails out of the loose dirt. I've been amazed at what I am able to unmask doing that.

Thank you OutdoorAdv. Yes I use the same technique. Once dirt is shoveled into my sifter I run a magnet to remove all the iron. Like you said its amazing what is masked by the iron. My top layer of soil is about 8 inch. then you hit a stone base, under that is a thick layer of oyster shells( Big Ones) then beneath in some areas a layer of burnt debri and relics. Its a fun site

Awesome finds! Crazy how few of those older coins may have been lost in the dirt.....then the odds of that area not being developed.....then swinging the coil over it! Crazy, but the stuff is out there to find.
