I give up! What IS this thing?

Found this in an area that is now a ghost town. We found coins from the early 1900's, harmonica reed, etc. It says automatic and then it has a bunch of decorative swirls. Has anyone seen something like this before? Thanks!

Small knife or sword scabard piece. Goes at the top of the handle where the blade begins. Just a guess, possibly a stilleto style automatic/switch blade. jgas
