The 9.4 metallic, magnetic rock with nickel content (far as I can tell), was sent today to a lab to have it tested definitively to see if it is a meteorite. If not, it will live outside in my rockpile, forever and ever. I put up post about the critter about 2 weeks ago, for reference.

Fingers Crossed! :icon_thumright:

It will probably take a week or two to find out.

Sure would be cool, I hope it is.

I think we are all pullin for ya smokey.... my uncle did the same thing years ago. He sent it somewhere and they cut a slice off it and polished it. It was beautiful, it was real, and it was valuable. The scientists kept the small slice for there database and sent him the big piece with a polished window in it. He found it in his yard in Connecticut.

I tried a diamond saw to take a small slice off the end. Only was trying to take off less than 1 inch. The rock threw sparks. I then took it to a Graves Mark IV faceting machine and ground a flat spot on it. The interior is black with spiny metal white sparkles in it. The rind, i.e. crust isn't great, like you'd see in a typical burn, but...specific gravity is correct. Streak is marginal and it is slightly magnetic. Minor nickel is present.

It also occurred to me could be s silver ore melt with impurities. It arrived in California. Should have the test back by probably Monday.

I live in Connecticut, maybe I also be lucky.

Maybe tomorrow. Tomorrow will be trying out the new Deus on a CW site which has been pounded.

My wife showed up at home the other day with a used Facetron machine in tow as our newest object of adoration. She's the rockhound, and we are both hoping for your success!

The testing is done. They are doing the analysis and paperwork for me now. Will know by TOMORROW! Yippee! Door stop rock, here we come! Although the lab guy DID ask if I wanted insurance when he sends it back.....hmmmmm.

Thats nuts, he just left you hanging like that.

Man I hope you got a winner.

Not a meteorite. A mixture of albite, quartz and iron rich clinoclore. ( I can't spell it right.)

You still got a door stop rock. I got one too. I better go do the magnet test on that sucker. Would have been epic to have a whale fossil and a meteorite too !!!
Darn it !!

This year rocked. I'll try to do an end of the year post. Gold coin, gold rings and earrings, almost 200 silver halves coin roll hunting, 1797 cent, Two Confederate plates, two Union, a wonderful spur, dozens of CW bullets, buttons, some ration cans, knapsack hooks, a few Amerindian artifacts, ink bottle, and several pounds of change from the local beach. Can't complain except the ground is starting to freeze some.

My daughter wants me to sledge it to see if there are crystals on the inside.
