Pardon my lack of worldly wisdom not acquired through vast experience, but what is a sewing bird? I will just leave it at that with none of the obvious spontaneous crackage.

My grandma used a machine to repair our clothes when I was younger. I really miss her. She did some good work on my favorite shirts. I found this explanation on the internet. http://monmouthmuseum.org/sewingbird.html "Sewing clamps were used in the 18th century to attach one end of a piece of cloth firmly to a table to enable a seamstress to hold her sewing taut with one hand while stitching with the other. Before the invention of the sewing machine clothing, sheets and other household items were sewn by hand." It can also have a pin cushion.

The sewing bird concept had never crossed my mind............until now. I have learned something. My only question is, what piece of knowledge have I lost to make room for the sewing bird? Worries me.

any guesses as to what period a piece like this might date from? it was found in the same general area as the reale i found was and near what i believe to be colonial cellar holes.

i was going to say it looks like a fancy surgeons clamp for blocking something while cutting on something else
