I found this in my front yard

I found this in my yard around 3 to 4" deep it is dated and has a patent #1589572 and a date April 1 1902,anyone have a clue

Did a google search on patent #1589572 and got this site:.......... http://www.freepatentsonline.com/1589572.html

Do you think it's the same patent number for the same item?

Publication date was in 1926

I did the same search and came up with the same thing I didn't know you could use the same patent on diffrent things

It looks sort of like the hinged lid from an old meter box. If so, 1589572 would be the meter number, not the patent number.
Here's a detail from a drawing for a patent dated April 1, 1902, for a water meter box. An arrow indicates the lid.
