looks like a key tag from an old motel or hotel, but could be a tag from just about anything.

True, I was just hoping it was some kind of military tag. It does look like something from an old hotel doesn't it. It excited me though, i've only had my detector for a few weeks and I am having a blast with it...I don't want to work anymore.

Thanks for the help,

Julien

Neat find, WTG!!!
I have found quite a few tags and have ID' ed only one of them, well it ID' ed itself... It says it's from the, "Indianapolis Parking Garage", I never knew parking garages ever used tags, so I'm assuming it's fairly old... I plan on getting enough to put into a nice display case someday...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

Hey Jbow, I am originally from your area... well about 45 minutes north on 75. Welcome to the MD'ing world! Most of my collection came from NW Georgia. You are in PRIME Md'ing territory there! Lots of good Civil War hunting right there in Cartersville! Good luck and Happy Huntin'!

Thanks, You know some good places in Cartersville? I have some private property I can access near downtown but i'm all ears if you know some other places.

Thanks,

J

BTW, most people think it's a cow tag... I guess it's either that or a miners tag, but there are no mines near Atlanta.

Hwy 41 was the main road from Chattanooga during the Civil War and 411 was the main road to Rome. 293 from downtown Cartersville to Acworth is now what was then 41. ALL OF THOSE were very heavily traveled during the war. If memory serves me, there were some really nice relics found when they built the golf course in Peoples Valley. There was also a pretty heated fight around Redtop Mtn. Allatoona Pass was also a very deadly fight. Sherman made camp at the old Cartersville Depot (I think that was near Church and Wall St) and there was a fight there between his forces and the Confederate soldiers and townfolk. Sherman also dismantled the railroad and telegraph in Cartersville.

I would also hit the Allatoona beaches when they drop the water. Especially around the old road beds that are now underwater. Remember that the lake wasn't there back then. Where the 293 Crosses the river just south of town, I believe that the old road was just north or east of the current position, and there was a skirmish there over the bridge.

That's about all I can remember right off top of my head. Good Luck! Let us know what all you find! And hit the swimming areas at the lake for rings and such when you don't have a lot of time! Easy Money!!!

Awesome Digemall... I live just off I-75 at exit 290. I love going down to the Allatoona Pass site but I have not searched around there, they say that was one of the hottest battles of the war if you consider the time length of the fight and the number of combatants and the casualties. It is a somber place. I have a customer who has a good size property just across the RR tracks where the unknown hero is buried. http://www.gbronline.com/rcrowe/unknown.htm
I used to live in Cassville just SE of the old cemetary and there were old trenches in the woods beside the house, they must have been trenches because they were now shallow and run through the woods, I gotts go look there too.
I REALLY apperciate all the hints of where to look, sometimes it takes me a while to discover the obvious. I have a friend who suggested the lakeshore, it get's really low in the winter, I don't reckon the Corps will care as long as i'm not around Allatoona pass with a detector, i'll walk it with my eyes open though, laff.

Thanks again,

Julien

One other thing... keep in mind that the areas that the National Park Service says are the battlefields are only a small part of the whole picture. One classic in the NW Georgia area is Chickamauga. It was fought over a vast area. I have relics from that battle that were thirty miles from the area that is now the park. Find the skirmishes!!! The small fights that didn't make park status! Most are on private property and a lot of folks don't mind you poking around if you just ask!

One of my best pieces came from asking permission from an elderly farmer. It is a full length bayonet. I asked the gentleman if he minded me detecting and he said "No. As a matter of fact, let me show you something." He took me to an old roadbed in the woods and said his grand dad said there was a big fight right here. And then said that when he was a kid he used to come there and gather minnie balls and shoot them with his flip.

Good luck and do keep us posted!!!!

Thanks. I've been doing a lot of reading and riding around and you're right. I got a pretty good book on the Atl Campaign. It's "The Campaign For Atlanta" by William R. Scaife, it has a lot of info and good maps. I got it from Wildman, you probably remember Wildman. Dent Myers in Kennesaw? Civil War Surplus store!

Thanks for the help,

J
