While metal detecting on edge of beach furthest from the water, and about 1000 feet perhaps south of the lifeguard tower at New Smyrna Beach's public beach. The metal detector picked up the signal from about 12 to 18 inches deep in the sand. Hearing that there had been some shipwrecks around there over the last 400 years, I thought with all the barnacles and shells embedded on them they might be broken parts of a ship washed up and buried over time. If they are, are they worth anything other than for a museum? Honest advice appreciated. (Please see two views on the two attachments - larger item is about 5 X 7 inches and smaller item looks like half of broken pipe and is about 3 inches across approx.)

Thanks,

Snowbird Gary

I find pieces of those along north east Florida. From St Augustine to Ormond. I honestly do not know what they are but I toss them into a bucket in my shed. Lol. Hopefully your post will shed some light on these neat bits of shell infused metals.

Have you ever investigated any danger in trying to remove encrustation to get to the real material? I'm thinking the real material might have markings of some kind possibly which could indicate from a shipwreck or ?? There must be some acid treatment that could disolve all but the metal maybe?

Has to be metal pipe covered with encrusting from some many years in the sea - otherwise metal detector would not have found it.
